Abstract
Recent studies report that the intensity of tropical cyclones will increase due to the global warming which also will raise the mean sea level. Consequently, the more coastal disasters by tropical cyclones will be inevitable without proper countermoves. To develop an operational prediction system in the estuarine and coastal regions is one of ways to prevent and to mitigate the natural hazards including tropical cyclones. The primary purpose of this paper is to develop an operational fine-mesh storm surge prediction system in the Korean coast. In this paper we introduced preliminary results for the storm surge simulation using an operational system at KORDI. The current operational storm surge system consists of three parts, sea wind models, storm surge models, and web service. The hindcasting of typhoon Maemi in September, 2003 showed reasonable agreement. For operational capability of this system was tested by simulation of typhoon Usagi, in August, 2007.
