Abstract
Kongsfjorden, Krossfjorden, and the front of Kongsfjorden near the Korean Arctic Station, Dasan, are glacial fjords in the Svalbard archipelago, Arctic, influenced by both Atlantic and Arctic water masses. During the Arctic field campaign between 12 – 17 June 2007, a total of 22 surface samples about chlorophyll concentration (), total suspended solid particle concentration (ss), water leaving radiance (Lw), and absorption coefficient of phytoplankton, suspended solid particle, dissolved organic matter (aph, ass, adom, respectively) was measured in the Konsfjorden, Krossfjorden and the front of Kongsfjorden. It was found that in-situ a*ph(440) maximum value was 0.1 m2/mg, in-situ a*ss(400) values ranged from 0.04 to 0.1 m2/g and in-situ adom(400) values ranged from 0.08 to 0.25 m-1 at the Kongsfjorden. The Arctic in-situ a*ph(440) values were higher (about two times) than those value of the Korean Peninsula’s seawaters. This means that the primary producer’s absorption efficiency at the Arctic area are higher than those in the coastal area at the middle latitudes. The Arctic in-situ a*ss(400) values were higher than those values of the Korean Peninsula’s seawaters and these were similar in the value at the East China Sea. This means that components of suspended solid particles at the Kongsfjorden were similar in inorganic matters of the East China Sea. The Arctic in-situ adom(400) values were higher than those values of the coastal seawater in the Korean Peninsula and these were similar in the value at the other Korean Peninsula’s area. It was found that average value of in-situ Ed(460) at the Kongsfjorden was 40 mW/cm2/m. This means that the irradiance of the Arctic area showed about 40 % of middle latitudes. The Arctic field campaign matched with the MODIS Aqua overpass on 14, 15, 17 June 2007, thus motivating this validation. It was found that in-situ values ranged from 0.16 to 3.70 mg/m3 (mean of 0.95 mg/m3) and MODIS Aqua’s
