Abstract
- Among many parameters for storm surge prediction, sea surface wind and pressure fields are critical parameters. For storm surge calculations, typhoon wind models have been widely studied and used to simulate sea winds and pressures. Intensive researches were carried out to verify typhoon wind models and most of efforts were mainly focused on the comparisons to the observed wind data. However, the studies of ocean model responses to the different typhoon wind models were seldom to find.In this study we tried to compare the storm surge heights using three different typhoon parametric models. With identical concentric atmospheric pressure distribution, two empirical typhoon parametric models (Jelesnianski, 1966 and Kawai et al., 2005) and CE wind model (Thompson and Cardone, 1996) were considered. For ocean model, KORDI-S (Lee et al., 2008) was used to calculate the storm surge heights around the Korean Peninsula. Typhoon “Maemi”, landed in Sep. 2003, was chosen to compare the performance of typhoon models because clear and reliable sea level records were available. The CE wind model gave the best performance.
