Abstract

London Protocol, which joined in 2009, requires that management process applied to dredged material should recognize that dredged material is an important natural resource that should be used for beneficial purposes, not waste. Nevertheless, the dredged materials on the Marine Environment Management Act are classified as waste and limit their beneficial use. As a result, the volume of dredged material dumped at sea was as much as 75% of the total dredged material generated in 2008. Therefore, this paper reviews the problem with the Marine Environment Management Act and suggests a better way to reduce the dumping of dredged material to sea in compliance with the London Protocol., the dredged materials on the Marine Environment Management Act are classified as waste and limit their beneficial use.
