Abstract
Variation in alkenone-derived sea surface temperature (SST) changes during glacial and interglacial periods in a piston core were strongly indicates tight association with climatic variation in East Sea area. Based on the unsaturated long-chain alkenones (ULA), oxygen isotope of foraminifera, and carbon and nitrogen isotope of organic matters, it was showed that significant drop of SST during MIS 6 and MIS 8 may reflect the combination of global climatic forcing and local oceanographic effects. The significant drop of SST and its difference in SST among MIS 2, 6 and 8 may be attributed to not only distinctive water mass formation, but also differential alkenone synthesis under differing environmental conditions. The general scenario of similar SST for the last three glacial periods (MIT 2, 6 and 8) is not applicable to the East Sea, but reflected sensitive responses to global climatic changes. Four possible configurations of the East Sea during glacial periods are drawn by this study. Each glacial period had independent characteristics, due to the effects from local geography and oceanographic conditions, such as restricted water circulation and climatic changes, and may have important implication for future prediction, and a model of climatic response of the ocean.
