Abstract
To gain the knowledge of effect of different environmental conditions such as temperature, salinity and prey densities on the growth of three Pfiesteria-like dinoflagellates (PLDs), Crytoperidiniopsis ribo-type, Luciella masanensis and Pfiesteria shunwayace, we performed laboratory culture experiment using the cryptophyte Rhodomonas sp. as food sources. Also, we tested the availability of representative phytoplankters causing red tides in Korean coastal waters as prey sources. The results displayed are commonly able to feed on the cryptophyte Rhodomonas sp., raphidophyte Heterosigama akashiwo and dinoflagellate Akashiwo sanguinea, but did not feed on thecate dinoflagellates such as. In feeding experiments, the specific growth rates of three PLD species increased with increase of temperature during the range from 15 to 30 ˚C. Within this temperature ranges, their specific growth rates also increased with increasing prey densities. On the other hand, they did not adapt low temperature conditions. Although they can adapt to wide range salinity level, the population growth of these three species have triggered with salinity levels from 5 to 15 PSU. Therefore, the present study demonstrated that PLD species have the potentials to grow better in (Korean) estuaries or coastal waters when H. akashiwo and cryptophyte species co-occurred in comparison with thecate red tide causative dinoflagellates during summer season.
