Abstract
- Measurements of the acoustic volume backscattering strengths from aggregations of the phytoplankton, Cochlodinium polykrikoides are presented, which is known to cause the harmful algal blooms (HABs) during the summer season in the coast of Korea. The measurements were made in July and August 2008 at the experimental site located off the coast of Geumo island on the south of Korea. 5MHz-transducer was deployed at depth 2m to avoid the contamination due to the scattering from near-surface microbubbles. The backscattered signals were collected from the distributions of C. polykrikoides ranging from 0.01 to 22.27×105 cells/L. The measured volume scattering strengths show the high correlation with concentrations of C. polykrikoides.
