Numerous photographs of freshly caught larval fishes with bright color pigments were taken using a new device, the photo-aquarium-cell (PAC) system. The major components of the PAC system are a pair of jar-type covers and glass slides which effectively eliminated the worst vessel-derived vibration effects, one of the major difficulties encountered when photographing small specimens on board. When photographing subjects in the PAC aboard the research vessel Onnuri (1,422 gross tons), a specimen was placed on a jar-type slide glass, a jar-type cover glass was placed over the specimen, making direct contact with it, and any gaps between the two glass plates were filled completely using filtered seawater. The lengths of digitally imaged specimens ranged from small eggs (2.3 mm in diameter) to larger adult fish (139.0 mm in total length).
