Abstract
We examined the temporal and spatial variation of surface fCO2 and its major controlling factors in the western North Pacific and the East China Sea based on surface fCO2, temperature and salinity continuously measured on board R/V Onnuri in September 2006, October 2007, and June 2008 and 2009. The western North Pacific and the East China Sea were distinguished in fCO2 distributions as well as characteristics of sea surface temperature (SST) and salinity (SSS). Diurnal variations of fCO2 corresponding to the diurnal variations of SST observed in the western North Pacific indicated that SST was a major factor controlling the surface fCO2 distribution. On the contrary, fCO2 distribution in the East China Sea was controlled by not only SST but also many other factors such as salinity, biological activities and vertical mixing of water column.Air-sea CO2 flux showed large temporal and spatial variations, with a range of -6.10~5.06 mmol m-2 day-1. The western North Pacific acted as a weak source of CO2, of which fluxes ranging from 0.34±0.53 mmol m-2 day-1 to 0.48±0.63 mmol m-2 day-1. However, the East China Sea acted as a sink of CO2 in both summer and spring. The fluxes ranged from -0.45±1.04 mmol m-2 day-1 to -5.67±3.97 mmol m-2 day-1 in summer and spring, respectively.
