Abstract
- Tropical marine sponges are fertile sources of secondary metabolites with novel molecular architectures. A variety of pentacyclic quinone and hydroquinone compounds has been isolated from marine sponge Xetospongia sp. These secondary metabolites have exhibited useful biological activities such ascardiotonicity, cytotoxicity, and enzyme inhibition. During our research for bioactive substances from tropical marine organisms, we isolated halenaquinolsulfate, xestoquinolsulfate, halenaquinone, tetrahydrohalenaquinone A, B, adociaquinone B, and xestosaprol from Xestospongia sp. collected from Chuuk, Federated State of Micronesia. The structures of these halenaquinone derivatives were elucidated on the basis of the spectral methods.
