Abstract
Typhoons generate the near-inertial oscillations (NIOs) in the upper mixed layer after its passage over the seas. There is much observational evidence that storms or typhoons with more strong winds can excite near-inertial currents in the mixed layer of the ocean. In the study the decaying of the inertial currents driven by the typhoons Nari is examined, using the two-layer numerical model, in the shallow stratified Yellow and East China Seas. under which environment few studies have been carried out. Observational evidence of the characteristic near-inertial current is presented, based upon ADCP data measured during typhoon Nari. The dispersion of the near-inertial currents in both the vertical and meridional directions spreads energy which was confined entirely to the upper mixed layer. Various decaying processes in principle can be examined based upon two-layer model results, such as radiation of NIOs excited by the inertial pumping, nonlinear interaction, bottom friction effect, and so on. Some result implies horizontal momentum diffusion process is involved. The energy fulx of near inertial current is shown and discussed. Acknowledgement.
