Abstract
Recently, New & Renewable Energy(NRE) including tide, tidal current, ocean wave and ocean thermal energy is suggested as a solution for the Low Carbon Green Growth(LCGG) and climate change in the world. Also, the importance of ocean energy resources has been increasing in Korea. This study mainly aims to understand the spatial distribution characteristics of seawater temperature for the development of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion in the Southern Sea of Korea. To understand spatial distribution characteristics, seawater temperature measurement data monitored by National Fisheries Research and Development Institute from 1961 to 2007 were gathered and spatial data were constructed using 81 digital charts. Then, differences of seawater temperature (ΔT) between sea surface and each depth were calculatedTo increase the reliability of research result, relative frequency(probability) of ΔT was calculated in the case of ΔT >5°C, >10°C, >15°C, >20°C, with each depth and bimonthly(Table 1). To calculate annual probability and number of days, database was constructed for the mean value of bimonthly seawater temperature. Based on this database, probability thematic map of ΔT was created using spatial interpolation techniqueOn the condition of ΔT >10°C and depth is 50m, probability was high(25%) in the Southeast coast of Korea. Although seasonal pattern was various, August was the highest and February was the lowest. Using database constructed in this study, estimation of number for available days could be possible in several conditions such as monthly, each depth and ΔT. Also it can be used as a essential data to predict the amount of ocean thermal energy resources and to select adequate site for the development of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion.
