Abstract
Chl-a algorithms for GOCI were developed by empirical and fluorescence methods with in-situ ocean environmental and optical data obtained seawater around the Korean Peninsula during 1998–2005. The empirical chl-a algorithm for GOCI were compared with OC4v4 & OC2v2 (chl-a algorithms for SeaWiFS) and YOC Chl-a algorithms. The RMSs of OC2v2, OC4v4, YOC Chl-a and empirical GOCI Chl-a algorithms obtained to apply in seawater around the Korean Peninsula were 0.392, 0.424, 0.247 and 0.218, respectively. The decrease rates of chlorophyll concentration obtained from YOC Chl-a algorithm for chlorophyll concentrations obtained from OC4v4 & OC2v2 algorithms were 48.2 % and 34.5 %, respectively. The decrease rates of chlorophyll concentration obtained from empirical GOCI Chl-a algorithm for chlorophyll concentrations obtained from OC4v4 & OC2v2 algorithms were 57.1 % and 45.8 %, respectively. The empirical GOCI Chl-a algorithm was showed better result than YOC Chl-a algorithm. The correlation coefficients (R2) between Flu(681), Flu(688),Flu(area) and in-situ chlorophyll concentrations were 0.88, 0.90 and 0.90, respectively. The R2 between Rrs(444)/Rrs(555), Rrs(490)/Rrs(555) and in-situ chlorophyll concentrations were 0.79 and 0.85, respectively. The R2 of the fluorescence-based algorithms appeared to be higher than those of the standard spectral ratios algorithms. In CASE-II waters, the fluorescence-based algorithms tended to reproduce in-situ chlorophyll concentrations, whereas standard spectral ratios algorithms gave inconsistent estimates, probably caused by the interference of inorganic sediment and dissolved organic matter in these waters. In the coastal area of the Korean Peninsula, we think that the fluorescence GOCI Chl-a algorithm is showed better result than the empirical chl-a algorithms.
