Abstract
Beach erosions occur along the east coast of South Korea and have been acceleratedrecently for the last decade. As a case study, East Sea Research Institute (ESRI) of Korea OceanResearch & Development Institute (KORDI) has been developing a beach monitoring system andobserving coastal morphologic changes using a variety of survey methods at Hujeong-ri Beach located atthe east coast of South Korea. This study has been monitoring morphologic changes, shoreline changes, swash opening/closing events at the subaerial beach area using a RTK-GPS system and aerial/terrestrialLiDAR systems since 2008. In addition, this study examined the long-term shoreline retreat rate at thestudy site using historical aerial photos and satellite images. Preliminary results indicate that the presentshoreline of the study site has retreated landward by 50m in maximum since 1971. The LiDAR data whichwere collected with a short-term survey frequency, however, indicate that sand erosion and depositionoccurred alternatively at the beach. It is unclear whether these short-term changes are seasonal changes. This study recently began to survey bathymetry and geoframewrok of the subaqueous shoreface area inorder to examine the relationship in sediment transport between the subaerial beach and subaqueousshoreface.
