Abstract
Mesocosm experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects on phytoplankton community under the future climate conductions. Enclosed mesocosm facility was fixed on floating raft system at Jangmok Bay (34.6 oN, 128.5 oE), and phytoplankton community was incubated under the conditions of increased pCO2 and/or temperature predicted value of 2100 (present: ca. 360 ppm +ambient temp., acidification: ca. 860 ppm +ambient temp., greenhouse: ca .860 ppm +high temp.). Chlorophyll a fluorescence was measured with 8-9 subsampling from dawn to dusk for understanding the diurnal fluctuations of photosynthetic activity. From the steady-state light-response curves (LCs) parameters, smaller values were shown at acidification condition compared with the present and greenhouse conditions after 5 days. Also community production, which is calculated by photosynthesis-irradiance curves, total biomass and in situ light attenuation profiles, were not affected throughout the experiment period. Our results represent that light utilization ability can be declined at high CO2 conditions with down-regulation of photosynthetic activity. We propose that primary production of phytoplankton community not affectedfrom physiological transition cased by enhanced CO2.
