Abstract
Passive air samplers consisting of polyurethane foam disks are cost-effective and simple tools that have been successfully employed for assessing air concentrations of semi-volatile organic compounds such as PAHs. Passive air samplers were deployed monthly at three sites during December 2007 to January 2009 after the Hebei Spirit oil spill on the west coast of Korea to monitor the petroleum derived vapor phase PAHs. Monthly variation of vapor phase 16 PAHs found at sampling sites are similar to those reported at reference site during the sampling period. On the other hand, concentrations of alkylated PAHs measured at Gaemok-port and Mallipo which were severely impacted by the accident were significantly higher than a reference site during December 2007. Ratios of the alkylated PAHs to 16 PAHs were calculated of 4.8, 2.9 and 0.5 for Gaemok-port, Mallipo, and Mageum-ri, respectively, implying the overwhelming input of petrogenic to pyrogenic sources. An oil fingerprinting index, PAHs double ratio (C2D/C2P vs C3D/C3P) was successfully applied for the identification of spilled oil at Mallipo and Gaemok-port. This study demonstrates that passive air sampling is useful tool for spatially resolved and time integrated monitoring of vapor phase PAHs in ambient air after an oil spill.
