Abstract
Monitoring of shoreline change with time series analysis for coastal zone is important for understanding the environmental processes of erosion or deposition. We analyzed the shoreline change using aerial photograph and satellite imagery from 1971 to 2009 in Uljin, Gyeongbuk, Korea. We used aerial photographs, IKONOS, KOMPSAR-1, KOMSAR-2 and LiDAR data. Geometric corrections were carried out for the image data. For the accurate shoreline extractions, we conducted a field work to measure the spectral characteristics among the wet sand, dry sand and sea (above 50cm, 100cm). And then, we extracted shoreline from geocoded images using the spectral differences between water and sand. The extracted shorelines were compared to recognize the change patterns. We made a DEM data using LiDAR data to test the applicability of quantifying the changes of shoreline. The results showed that the pattern of deposition has been shown near the nuclear power plant by maximum 120 m of shoreline change toward sea being detected. A pattern of deposition was identified near the branch of KORDI by maximum 45 m from 1971 to 2003, however, maximum 42 m of erosion was detected from 2003 to 2009. The shoreline changes are influenced by many factors and the construction of nuclear power plant is considered to be a main factor of the change in the study area. However, more sedimentary and physical studies are needed to reveal the cause of deposition or erosion at this site.
