Abstract
We investigated mesozooplankton community and the related environmental factors to understand latitudinal differences of biological(chlorophyll-a: chl-a) and environmental characteristics (temperature and salinity) in the Yellow Sea in summer 2010. The stations were located on the different survey lines from coastal to offshore (124.5 and 125.5°E) at two different latitudes (34.5 and 36°N). We used stratified tows with open-closing net systems for mesozooplankton at five depths strata (0-10m, 10-20m, 20-40m, 40-60m, 60-80m) without distinction of day and night. Vertical characteristics of temperature and salinity were clearly different between two survey lines. At the line of 36°N, clearly stratified structure was characterized by high temperature (>28°C) and salinity (31.58-32.14) of water covering most of surface waters with existence of the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water(YSBCW). However, less clear stratification stemmed from relatively low temperature (20.84-25.84°C) and salinity (30.96-31.45) of water in the surface waters at the line of 34.5°N with existence of the YSBCW at offshore stations. Vertical distribution of total chl-a concentration was characterized by subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) depth at north line and relatively high concentration of chl-a in the surface waters at south line. The vertical characteristics of chl-a concentration was coincident with vertical distributional pattern of mesozooplankton. High abundances of mesozooplankton were found in the depth (20-40m) corresponding to the SCM depth at north line and in the surface waters with relatively high concentration of chl-a at south line. The copepod Acartia omorii characterized vertical distribution of total mesozooplankton at north line, whereas Paracalanus parvus s.l. mainly contributed to the high abundances of mesozooplankton in the surface waters at south line. Abundances of Oithona atlantica and appendicularians at south line occurred higher than those at north line, indicat
