Abstract
The ocean response to typhoon Nari (2007) on continental shelf of the East ChinaSea (ECS) is analyzed using the thermal structure and the velocity data observed byAutonomous Drifting Ocean Station drifters and a bottom moored Acoustic DopplerCurrent Profiler. The thermal structure in the ECS responses to typhoon Nari veryquickly; the seasonal thermocline in 30 m depth layer was abruptly collapsed and thesea surface temperature was dropped about 4°C by the vertical mixing and surfacecooling within 7 hours during the typhoon passage. The vertical shear between thewind-driven current in upper layer and the background semi-diurnal tidal currentaffected the vertical mixing during the typhoon arrival. It is noticeable that strongnear-inertial internal oscillation subsisted in the middle layer of water column justafter the typhoon passage, though there was no significant interfacial structure. Afterthe typhoon passage, the near-inertial internal oscillation maintained the verticalmixing during several days
