Abstract
Korea has experienced various kind of coastal hazard due to storm induced water elevation rise and wave run-up and overtopping along the coast of Korea. The need to manage and plan for natural hazards has been a significant issue in Korea. In 2003, typhoon Maemi killed a dozen of people and damaged coastal resources along the coastal area of south east part of Korea, which highlighted the need for coastal protection from severe typhoons in Korea. Following the request of Korean government, KORDI prepared long and short term plan to develop proper measures to minimize damages due to typhoon (Lee et al., 2004), which includes the following three areas:i). Improvement of coastal monitoring systemii). Establishment of short-term real-time forecasting systemiii). Long-term engineering measure through estimation of design criteria and hazard map.A series of research and contract projects has been initiated to reduce typhoon induced coastal hazard. To better estimate wave and storm surge in fine grid along the coast of Korea, Korean government supported a project in the development of fine mesh coastal wave and storm surge modeling system for the 52 commercial ports. Similar program is being carried out for the major fishing ports (Figure 1)
