Abstract
This study investigates freshwater budget in the Yellow and East China Seas (YECS) using a global ocean general circulation model with regional focus on the YECS. Freshwater budget analysis finds that major freshwater contributors over the YECS change seasonally. In summer, freshwater inflow from Changjiang and positive precipitation minus evaporation (P-E) dominates saline water inflow from Kuroshio intrusion, resulting in freshwater gain in the YECS. In winter, freshwater outflow from negative P-E and saline Kuroshio intrusion dominates freshwater inflow from CRD, resulting in freshwater loss in the YECS. This suggests that surface freshwater flux (P-E) should be considered in investigating seasonality of salinity in the YECS, although surface freshwater flux often has been assumed to be negligible by supposing that annual mean of precipitation is nearly equal to that of evaporation. Furthermore, Kuroshio intrusion is a crucial component and needs to be included for freshwater budget, because it is responsible for supplying saline water into the YECS throughout the year with maximum (minimum) transport of saline water in summer (winter).
