Abstract
A massive bloom of the green macroalgae Ulva prolifera firstly reported in June 2008 around Olympic city, Qingdao, China and spread out the Yellow Sea, East China Sea as well as Japan coast. U. prolifera recruited again in the similar season and region. Recently, the world’s first Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) detected an enormous bloom of the green macroalgae Ulva prolifera in June 13, 2011 around Qingdao, China, which originated from the nearshore Subei Bank. Large patches of U. prolifera were determined along and across the Yellow Sea and in East Chin Sea in June 19 and 20, 2011, which confirmed from various cruises. To determine the massive macroalgae bloom events from the space, we analysis the spectral characteristics of them from in situ measurement and then applied to the GOCI images using band ratio. The signals of the green macroalgae blooms separated from surrounding target signals. Our analysis approach should be useful for tracing and monitoring changes in the green algae blooms at region.
