Abstract
In this study, we have carried out reliability analyses of gravity type quay walls and found sliding and foundation failure modes were dominant in quay wall structure. The purpose of this paper is to estimate the target probabilities of failure in the bearing capacity of quay wall foundations. In order to consider the safety margin of structures which have been executed so far, the reliability levels of existing structures were assessed. Then the mean probability of failure of quay walls was evaluated. In addition, a life cycle cost (LCC) analyses of representative quay walls were performed. For these, the probability of failure for several quay walls was calculated for the changing the width of each section. The LCC for each was estimated, and then the probability of failure, which minimizes LCC, was determined. Korean quay wall had an average probability of failures of 3.6%. On the other hand, average optimum probability of failure is 4.0% from this study agrees with the theoretical valuesailure in the bearing capacity of quay wall foundations.
