Abstract
We investigated spatial and temporal variation in nutrients and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) in the southeastern Yellow Sea in spring and summer of 2009 to 2011. In spring, higher Chl-a concentrations occurred in open waters where the Yellow Sea Cold Water (YSCW) exited at depth and the warm Kuroshio-East China Sea (KE) appeared in nearshore waters. Nutrients showed a strong negative relationship with chlorophyll-a in spring, and the subsurface chlorophyll-a maxima (SCM) layer was associated with the nitracline and the phosphocline in summer. In summer, SCM was usually found within or above the pycnocline and at the depths of shoals from the open sea to the coastal sea due to tidal and/or topographical fronts in the southernmost study area. After a typhoon in summer 2011, Chl-a increased, especially in the central southern Yellow Sea, where the YSCW occurred below the pycnocline. Although many environmental factors affected the Chl-a distribution, the increased stability of the water column because of the formation of the YSCW seemed to be the dominant factor in the study area.ea Cold Water (YSCW) exited at depth and the warm Kuroshio-East China Sea (KE) appeared in nearshore waters.
