Abstract
- This study investigates interannual variability of sea surface salinity (SSS) in the Yellow and East China Seas (YECS) in relation to ENSO using a global ocean general circulation model. A cyclostationary EOF analysis finds that the interannual variability of the SSS in the YECS is mainly attributable to a Changjiang river discharge (CRD) variability. The CRD variability is linked to El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-related precipitation over east China. When El Nino event occurs in winter, more rainfall is observed over east China in the rainy season of the following year. The heavy precipitation leads to a large amount of CRD, which results in decreasing SSS in the YECS. This suggests that summer SSS variability in the YECS is closely linked to the ENSO via the summer precipitation system over east China.erannual variability of the SSS in the YECS is mainly attributable to a Changjiang river discharge (CRD) variability.
