Abstract
A flapping-type generator extracts power from tideinducedvertical or swing motion of a hydrofoil or hydroplanesubmerged in water. When a nose-up pitch angle is prescribedfor the hydroplane, it moves upward creating an upstroke of theflapping arm and vice versa for nose-down pitch. These up anddown motion are then converted into a continuous rotary motionof an output shaft by a transmission system. In this study, weintroduce the design and prototype implementation of a flappingtypetidal energy harvester including details on the design of thehydroplane, transmission, dynamic model, pitch control system,and its preliminary tests.flapping arm and vice versa for nose-down pitch.
