Abstract
This study investigates interannual variability of sea surface salinity (SSS) in the Yellow and East China Seas (YECS) in relation to El Nino–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) using a global ocean general circulation model. A cyclostationary EOF analysis finds that interannual variability of the SSS in the YECS is mainly attributable to a variability of the Changjiang river discharge (CRD). The variability of the CRD is linked to ENSO-related precipitation in central China; when El Nino events occur in winter, precipitation in central China increases in the rainy season of the following years. The increased precipitation in El Nino years results from enhanced southwesterly moisture flux from the South China Sea into central China, which decreases SSS in the YECS through augmented CRD. This suggests that interannual variability of the summer SSS in the YECS is closely linked to ENSO through CRD; when El Nino occurs, above-normal precipitation in central China decreases SSS in the YECS due to increased CRD.
