Abstract
Up to now, most tidal stream generators have been developed in rotary type turbines which are operated by one-way directional rotation. As an alternative, a flapping type turbine, which is run by an oscillating motion, have been recently developed inspired by the nature. In order to compare the different concept turbine with the typical rotary turbine, a mechanism that changes from the oscillation to the one-way rotation is necessary. Thus, we develop the mechanism with a linkage and gear set, subsequently the flapping type turbine could be connected to a typical RPM-Torque measuring sensor as a rotary turbine could. In this paper, a horizontal axis turbine is selected among the rotary turbines. We first introduce an experimental apparatus for each turbine, and compare the characteristics of torque, RPM and power with time varied from the measured data. Second, fluctuations in the data and efficiencies are then presented for the comparison of their performances. Through our work, we will suggest a design scheme of the flapping type turbine in order to become a good alternative of the rotary turbinesly developed inspired by the nature.
