Abstract
As climate changes, the intensity and frequency of extreme events such as typhoon and storm surge in the coastal areas can be altered and have impacts on various industries and the society. To simulate such changes and impacts on a regional scale in future climate projection, a regional climate model coupled with an atmosphere model and an ocean model is necessary. For that purpose, we have started developing high resolution regional climate coupled model for the domain including the Western North Pacific Ocean (WNPO). The coupled model consists of an ocean model, Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) and an atmosphere model, Weather Research Forecasting (WRF). For the ocean model, we used a horizontal resolution of 1/12 degrees and a vertical resolution with 30 sigma layers within the WNPO model nested by a 1/6 degree North Pacific Ocean model. In this study, we evaluated the performance of the WNPO model with its historical simulation. The spatial distribution of simulated sea surface temperature is generally consistency with that of satellite data. The volume transports simulated in Korea Strait, Tsugaru Strait, and Soya Strait are similar to those in observational data. In overall, climatologically monthly mean spatial distribution of simulated mixed layer depth (MLD) are comparable to that of Montegut et al. (2004)’s climatology, except that the simulated winter MLD is shallower than the observational re scale in future climate projection, a regional climate model coupled with an atmosphere model and an ocean model is necessary.
