Abstract
The Korean Peninsula is under the influence of complexity and variety of synoptic systems because of the geographical location. Two or three tropical cyclones (TC) have direct influences over the Korean Peninsula every year. Especially, TCs moving northward have significant impacts on the weather over the Korean Peninsula through interaction with the synoptic environment. Occasionally, a trough extended from inland China to the Yellow Sea induces development of heavy rainfall in the Korean Peninsula when a TC lands on southern China. In this case, the TC appears to impact the development of a trough and heavy rainfall over the Korean peninsula. However, the relationship between the TC landing on southern China and the development of cyclonic disturbance in eastern China has not been understood well. In this study, synoptic charts and reanalysis data for a heavy rainfall case in Korea on 21 September 2010 were used to understand the relationship between TC and development of cyclonic disturbance. Additionally, numerical simulation with WRF has been carried out. An observation-based analysis presents that the trough, extended from inland China to the Shandong Peninsula during tropical cyclone ‘FANAPI’ landfall on the southern China, induced heavy rainfall over the Korean Peninsula. The trough development mainly depends on warm advection, latent heating, and horizontal wind shear.
