dc.description.abstract The present study analyzed the community structure of the meiobenthos in major Bays around southern coastal waters, i.e. the Bay of Gamak, the Bay of Gwangyang and the Bay of Jinhae, which are intensively packed with a range of industrial complex and fish farms and highly contaminated with inflows of inland pollution sources such as municipal sewage and wastewater. The habitats density and dominant taxa of the meiobenthos population in each area were analyzed. Also, correlation analysis was conducted between environmental characteristics and community characteristics. To evaluate the degree of health in the benthic ecosystem in each bay, the ecological indices for the meiobenthos, i.e. N/C ratio, MPI(Meiobenthos pollution Index), ITD(Index of Trophic Diversity) and MI(Matuarity Index) index were applied.According to the results of the community structure and health-degree test in each bay, the Bay of Gwangyang showed the lowest degree of pollution among the three and thus proved to be cleanest compared with the others, whereas the Bay of Jinhae was found to be most polluted although the difference from the Bay of Gamak in terms of the degree of pollution was negligible. To sum up, community characteristics proved relatively consistent with ecological indices, given both the community characteristics of the meiobenthos and the results of the ecological index-based comparison of the health degree in each bay.omplex and fish farms and highly contaminated with inflows of inland pollution sources such as municipal sewage and wastewater. The habitats density and dominant taxa of the meiobenthos population in each area were analyzed.
