Abstract
To explain resource competition of phytoplankton, several schemes of strategies have been proposed. Although there are subtle differences among the schemes under different names, the strategies can be classified into three basic types: affinity, velocity and storage strategies. Here I examine consequences of adopting the three strategies under continuous and pulse inputs of nutrients using a variable-internal-stores model. Continuous input provides competitive advantages to affinity strategists, and leads to competitive exclusion. Pulse input provides advantages to velocity strategists making more species co-exist. Pulse inputs with longer intervals further provide benefits to storage strategists. When both types of nutrient input are present, continuous input modulates the effects of nutrient pulses on competition.
