Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to identify gene biomarkers ofexposure to munitions constituents (MCs) in fathead minnow,Pimephales promelas. Ongoing and historical training and rangeexercises by the Army have resulted in the release and accumulationof toxic chemicals in streams, rivers, and rainwater runoff.Without a clear understanding of the potential toxicity of the toxicants, conventional methods for quantifying chemicals in theenvironment and cleanup efforts are insensitive and based oneither the lethality of the chemicals in acute toxicity tests or oncontaminant levels derived by instrumental analyses. These methodsdo not provide information about the potential health risks. accumulationof toxic chemicals in streams, rivers, and rainwater runoff.Without a clear understanding of the potential toxicity of the toxicants, conventional methods for quantifying chemicals in theenvironment and cleanup efforts are insensitive and based oneither the lethality of the chemicals in acute toxicity tests or oncontaminant levels derived by instrumental analyses.
