Abstract
- Desert has long been used for vicarious calibration of operational satellites due to its optimal radiometric properties. A critical part in utilizing the measured top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance for calibration is the characterization of bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) of the surface and the atmosphere over the areas. Few studies have addressed BRDF of this “combined” (surface + atmosphere) entity mainly due to limitation in angular sampling and day-to-day atmospheric variability. This study addresses the BRDF characterization of desert sites in North America by using historical geostationary satellite data, which will provide unique and dense angular sampling of TOA reflectance.idirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) of the surface and the atmosphere over the areas.
