dc.description.abstract Aragonite saturation state was estimated for surface and bottom waters in Kwangyang Bay, Korea, during the four seasons to assess seasonal variations of aragonite saturation state and determine the major controlling factors. Both the surface and bottom waters were undersaturated with respect to aragonite during summer but were supersaturated during the other seasons. In summer, surface aragonite saturation state values were well correlated with surface salinity, suggesting that they were significantly influenced by river runoff. The summertime undersaturation of the surface waters with respect to aragonite may have been a result of the dilution effect caused by higher seasonal river runoff. The aragonite saturation state values of the bottom water, however, were not correlated with salinity, implying that the undersaturated bottom waters were not directly associated with the river runoff. The alkalinity decrease from spring to summer was due mainly to dilution by fresh waters having low total alkalinity values. The dissolved inorganic carbon increase from spring to summer may be attributable to intense remineralization of organic matter in the bottom waters during summer. The summertime undersaturation with respect to aragonite in the surface and bottom waters was not related to the ocean acidification induced by the invasion of anthropogenic CO2.e and bottom waters were undersaturated with respect to aragonite during summer but were supersaturated during the other seasons.
