Abstract
A practical method is proposed to estimate the M2 tidal current from a current observation during one day. In this method, the semi-diurnal constituent, a composition of several constituents within semi-diurnal frequency band which are in un-resolved condition from one day period, is corrected into M2 constituent by the amplitude ratio and the phase difference between each constituent. The most dominant M2 constituent is accurately estimated from the semi-diurnal constituents. However, this method is not always successful to apply on a diurnal constituent which is much weaker than M2. The accuracy of the method is dependent on the signal to noise ratio and the time of the observation. An observation during the spring period is highly recommended to reduce a calculation error. The application of this method is sufficiently available in the western and southern coasts of Korea where the semi-diurnal tidal current is the most predominant compartment in water circulation.n-resolved condition from one day period, is corrected into M2 constituent by the amplitude ratio and the phase difference between each constituent.
