dc.description.abstract This paper demonstrates the importance of adequate sampling frequency in time when collecting data for the evaluation of long-term trends in phytoplankton estimates. Variability in phytoplankton in the fixed station has been recorded in twice a week from January to December in 2009. The appropriate resolution depends on the variability in chlorophyll a concentrations. At fixed station, one weekly interval is required during bloom periods when variability is highest, especially in spring, to reveal a 5% difference in the average chl a concentrations at the 0.05 significance level. In summer, the resolution needed to detect a similar difference is one weekly sampling interval. The chl-a concentration showed similar patterns in surface and bottom waters. When frequency wad decreased to one weekly, the annual succession was well distinguished, but peak values were lost. In an attempt to clarify the importance of temporal sampling resolution at fixed stations on annual primary production estimates. In conclusion, seasonal dynamics in phytoplankton biomass cannot be detected reliably without high sampling resolution in one year.ce a week from January to December in 2009.
