Abstract
The Donskoi Project was conducted to find the sunken Russian warship, called the Dmitri Donskoi. The Donskoi launched in 1883, which fought against Japan to the last moment during the Russo-Japanese War was sunk for itself near the Ulleung Island, East Sea of Korea on May 29, 1905. This warship was eventually identified after the hardship of five-year (1999 ~ 2003) geophysical and geological survey with the support of the variable information of Russian and Japanese maritime historical records about the possible position of this sunken warship. On the basis of the acquired geophysical and geological data, this warship was positioned about 400 m below sea level and about 2 km distance from the Port Jeodong of Ulleung Island and dangled on the side of channel at the sea floor along continental slope. Several war materials including 152 mm naval guns still attached to the hull of this ship are found. We found first time from the search of historical records that the troops of Donskoi deployed in the Jemulpo Harbor and moved to Seoul on May 12, 1896, in order to protect the Emperor Gojong of Joseon Dynasty (last Kingdom of Korea) called Agwan Pacheon (Korean Emperor refuge at the Russian Legation). Also, other historical records showed that the Donskoi was used for the hydrographic survey from the Jemulpo(Incheaon) Harbor to the Mapo Ferry of Seoul. This Donskoi Project provides not only the important informatiIsland, East Sea of Korea on May 29, 1905.
