dc.description.abstract Tide and tidal current at the Maenggol channel is very complicated. One reason is that the south-west corner of Korean peninsula is the cross-roads of tidal wave and a lot of islands and narrow straits are located Tidal current predictions are valid only at a given observed point and at a given depth they stand in sharp contrast to waterlevel predictions which can easily extended to other stations by simple correlations and extrapolations, turn out to be fairly accurate. This applies to tidal current predictions at sunken Sewol location which is about 2 km north of previous one-month ADCP observation thus KHOA annual tidal current tables are prepared. Situation is similar to buoy observation (downlooking ADCP) and new prediction is being performed based on this. Surprisingly 2006 observation showed that intensity of surface permanent current is about half knot (18 cm/sec) indicating even slack time this current exist. The complete tidal simulations with fine-mesh FEM (20-50 m mesh to represent complicated coastal configurations) have also shown that dynamical, transient tidal eddies at sunken ship location overlap frequently with slack tide forecast. Expertise analysis and advice is essential for rescue operation.ctions are valid only at a given observed point and at a given depth they stand in sharp contrast to waterlevel predictions which can easily extended to other stations by simple correlations and extrapolations, turn out to be fairly accurate.
