Abstract
We analyzed the outputs of the historical and Representative Concentration Pathway 4.5 runs of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 multi-model dataset to investigate influence of climate change in the Arctic region on westerly wind under greenhouse warming.The changes in zonal wind in the multi- model ensemble mean (MME) of the 34 coupled general circulation models (CGCMs) exhibit a strengthening of the westerly wind and its poleward shift. However, a considerable diversity in zonal wind responses exists among CGCMs. The differences in the simulated zonal wind responses are dependent on two features of Arctic climate changes, i.e., Arctic surface warming and polar cap cooling.
