Abstract
Since early 1970s, coastal structures of various types and dimensions such as fishing ports, offshore breakwaters and seawalls associated with coastal roads have been steadily constructed along the Korean coastline. These constructions have had a major negative impact as the initial local erosion propagated outwards and gradually perturbed the larger coastal cell. Although since 2000 the Korean central government initiated projects to mitigate erosion, the results have not been satisfactory because of poor understanding of inherent local processes and limitations of the applied numerical models. In order to effectively and efficiently cope with coastal erosion problems, a 5-year (2013-2017) national R&D project ‘Coastal MIDAS (Modelling, Intelligent Defence and Adaptation based on Scientific understanding, hereafter CoMIDAS)’ was launched by the Korean government. The Korean Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) and Deltares collaborate in developing coastal modelling tools suitable for Korean coastal studies that can be used for better choice, design and evaluation of beach erosion control methods including no action, soft and hard defences. The first objective of this co-research is to to develop a generic modelling framework applicable on all relevant spatial (km to m) and temporal scales (days to decades) relevant to evaluate coastal developments along the Korean East coast.
