Abstract
Due to the recent rise in the number of HNS (hazardous and noxious substances) shipments in Korean coastal waters, the incidence of spillage accidents is gradually increasing. Unfortunately, the response system for marine pollution in South Korea has been limited to oil spillage accidents, and systematic studies related to HNS spillage accidents, their handling and follow-up management have not been conducted. As part of a national project to build a system to cope with a rising number of marine HNS accidents, the present study collected domestic and international data on the handling of over 6,000 cases of HNS spilled and sunken in the marine environment. Based on the analysis of these data, the applicable methods for chemically treating the sunken HNS were examined in this study.
