Abstract
6-14 kHz bottom backscattering measurements for the grazing angle of 28°-69° were conducted at a sand bottom off the southern coast of Gyeonggi Bay in the Yellow Sea. Geoacoustic surveys for the experimental area were performed using multi-beam echo sounder and grab sampling in order to examine the bottom topography and surficial sediment properties, respectively. In addition, the bottom roughness spectra were estimated from 0.5 m resolution of the digital elevation model (DEM) data obtained by multi-beam echo sounder. Finally, the measured bottom backscattering strengths as a function of grazing angle were compared the model predictions obtained by the APL-UW high-frequency scattering model in which the measured roughness spectra were used.i-beam echo sounder and grab sampling in order to examine the bottom topography and surficial sediment properties, respectively.
