Abstract
The effect of Changjiang discharge on the variability of phytoplankton biomass over the Northeast Asian Sea was investigated using satellite-based chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a). The difference in Chl-a anomalies between high and low Changjiang discharge of the years were estimated and then normalized to the standard deviation (DS ratio). An area of strong positive DS ratio of Chl-a was observed first in front of Changjiang estuary in July, which then spreads to the East China Sea in August, extends to Korea Strait in September and finally reached to the Southwestern East/Japan Sea in October. The DS ratio analysis is also used to investigate the influence of other local environmental processes on the changes in phytoplankton biomass in the East/Japan Sea. Our results suggested that the effect of summer Changjiang discharge on Chl-a was maintained in the East/Japan Se with a time delay of 2-3 months.hangjiang discharge of the years were estimated and then normalized to the standard deviation (DS ratio).
