Abstract
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have occurred around the coastal waters of Korean peninsula since late 1980s. Satellite remote sensing has been used to detect and monitor the temporal and spatial distributions of widespread HABs. To use satellite remote sensing more effectively in detecting HABs, we should be able to discriminate the remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) of HAB species from those of non-causative species. In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of absorption coefficients and simulated Rrs of the four dinoflagellate HAB species (Cochlodinium polykrikoides, Akashiwo sanguinea, Alexandrium tamarense and Scrippsiella trochoidea) which are among the major HAB species in Korean waters. We calculated the absorption coefficients (aph) of four HAB species using culture samples. The shapes and magnitudes of absorption spectra of the four dinoflagellate HAB species show clear differences at the visible wavelengths. Next, we used the HydroLight model (version 5.1 Mobley, 1995) to simulate the Rrs under dynamic optical conditions. For HydroLight simulations, we used the phytoplankton absorption coefficients measured from the cultures and absorption and backscattering coefficients of other optical constituents obtained from the synthetic database (IOCCG Report 5, 2006). In spite of the clear differences in absorption spectra of four species, the Rrs spectra of species simulated under the same conditions are indistite remote sensing more effectively in detecting HABs, we should be able to discriminate the remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) of HAB species from those of non-causative species.
