Abstract
The possibility of invasion success by phytoplankton assemblages was investigated by taking into account various scenarios of port water dilution rates with time delay for exponential growth of the plankton. Phytoplankton samples were collected from ballast water of 12 ocean voyage ships. Phytoplankton was reintroduced into ballast water, shipside seawater, and nutrient-enriched F/2 medium and incubated at various water temperatures and salinities over 2 weeks. The results suggest that, once introduced by ballast water, the growth of a particular phytoplankton community may depend mostly on nutrient levels and water temperature, but less on salinity. Both high nutrient concentration and water temperature may significantly shorten the time period before exponential growth takes place, increasing the invasion potential.cted from ballast water of 12 ocean voyage ships.
