Abstract
- The operational ocean forecasting system is necessary to reduce ocean related disasters such as storm surges, abnormal waves, search and rescue, and oil spill wich cause tremendous damages by timely providing useful ocean information, for initial countermeasure. It is also a powerful tool to manage the ocean territory and to understand ocean for protection and preservation for ocean environment as well as it will provide social-economic benefits. The Korea Operational Oceanographic System (KOOS) has been developing to produce real-time forecasting and simulation of interdisciplinary multi-scale oceanic fields including atmospheric forcing by the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST). This system offers various information to make more efficient decision making for mitigating coastal disasters, such as oil spills and other marine accidents, and provides the necessary oceanic and meteorological predictions to support the marine activities of government agencies, marine industries, and public users.nitial countermeasure.
