Abstract
While the East/Japan Sea (EJS) exhibits its own thermohaline circulation, the upper-ocean properties are related to those of the western North Pacific mainly due to the Tsushima Warm Current that delivers warm and saline water from the south to the EJS. Long-term (1973-2012) variability of the upper 400 m temperature in the EJS is compared with that of the western North Pacific and their relationship is presented based on the gridded observation dataset. It turns out their co-variability is explained by both ocean current and large-scale atmospheric variabilities, and possible time-scale dependence in the co-variability is discussed based on the reanalysis dataset.h to the EJS.
