dc.description.abstract Ocean Research Stations (ORSs) have been run since 2003 in the jurisdictional sea area andthe neighborhood of Korea. The Ieodo ORS had been firstly constructed in 2003, and then theShinan Gageocho ORS in 2009 and the Ongjin Socheongcho ORS in 2014. These stations wereinitially established by the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) as part ofthe R&D project of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. The Korea Hydrographic andOceanographic Agency (KHOA) then took over control and management of the Ieodo OceanResearch Station in 2007, followed by the Shinan Gageocho and Ongjin Socheongcho Stationsin 2016. The ORSs are carrying out long-term oceanographic, meteorological and environmentalobservation. The KHOA and KIOST have been working together to support research for usingORSs. Located 149 km southwest of Mara Island (9 km south of Jeju Island), the Ieodo OceanResearch Station makes an ideal spot for oceanographic and meteorological research due to itspresence at the pathway of typhoons heading for the Korean Peninsula. It has 29 pieces ofequipment installed for collecting oceanographic, meteorological and environmental data. TheKHOA has been conducting stay-research at the Ieodo Ocean Research Station since 2014 tofurther enhance it to be an international observation station. 12 academic research projects werebeing carried out in 2016.
