Abstract
We investigated abundance and composition of microplastics (200㎛ - 2㎜) in archived zooplankton samples collected from the Yellow Sea. Microplastics and zooplankton were analyzed from archived samples collected at 12 stations between 35– 36°N and 124.30– 125.40°E in the Yellow Sea, where zooplankton samples were collected by depth strata sampling at five different layers (0-10m, 10-20m, 20-40m, 40-60m, 60-80m) using a closing net (diameter: 60 cm mesh size: 200 µ m) in April and August 2013.
Microplastics occurred at almost all stations during the study. Total abundances of microplastics ranged from 0.00 to 25.22 particles/m3 in April, from 0.00 to 9.44 particles/m3 in August. From the five depths, microplastic abundances in the surface waters (0-10m) were dominant in the range of 8.71 and 25.22 particles/m3 in April, 3.77 and 9.44 particles/m3 in August. Microplastic abundances in the lower layers (40~90m) ranged from 0.00 to 9.98 particles/m3 in April, from 0.00 to 7.34 particles/m3 in August. Types of microplastic were fiber, sphere, hard plastic, other foamed and paint particles in the surface waters during the study. Specific polymer types of microplastic were polypropylene, polyester, cotton, polystyrene, polyethylene, polyethylene terepthalate and alkyd. Among the types, polypropylene was the most dominated 64.4% in April and 75.2% in August in the surface waters.
